It's been a couple of months since those major hacks that leaked millions of SS numbers, so I thought I had dodged the proverbial bullet. But I guess it takes time to inform everybody. Once a month I get emails from Discover and they've always said no new accounts opened, no new inquiries (unless I'd applied for credit) and "nothing found on the thousands of dark web sites we monitor". In fact, I got confused because a couple of days after getting the warning email, I got the "No New Alerts This Month" email. When I called, the fraud department, the rep said it's because those get sent out in batches and were probably queued to be sent out around the same time the warning email was sent.
The email warning me that my SS# was found told me to do these three things:
1. Place a fraud alert on Experian.com. I wondered why they only named one credit monitoring agency. I found out when I added the fraud alert that Experian and the others (I did it at Transunion too), send the alerts to the other two agencies. I already had credit freezes at all three companies.
2. Review my recent credit report and provided the following link to get a free copy.
Annual Credit Report.com - Home Page
3. Review resources at ssa.gov/fraud
