Hot Dog Buns...

When cutting a hot dog bun do you cut the top or the side?

Every single hot dog bun I've ever used has been shaped by a mold to easily be cut on the side. I imagine that if anyone cut it from the top, down, whatever was plopped into that cut would work its way right out the sides. šŸŒšŸ˜›

The hot dog buns that I buy are precut.

I prefer the soft-sided split top or top loading New England style buns, toasted please.

The only place you're likely to find the type that's split from the top is in New England, and even here the stores offer both varieties. I much prefer the conventional (split from the side) kind, but I suppose it has to do with what you're accustomed to.

How would cutting from the top allow you to ut a hot dog in there? wouldn't you just end up with two smaller uncut buns? Maybe I am not visualizing this correctly

Almost all hot dog buns sold in stores that I frequent are pre-cut. If they're available, I prefer those cut from the top as I find they better maintain contents.

It appears we have uncovered the UK's great hot dog bun abuse. For centuries, they have been abusing helpless buns by maliciously hacking them to pieces. I have heard they gather in large numbers, which they call "going on picnic". And in full view of the hot dogs, they slash away with large knives at defenseless buns. At least in the US, we eat our hotdogs unscathed by cold steel.

I rather liked these. I like lots of pickle relish on my hot dogs and regular buns get soggy and the hot dog falls out the bottom if I don't eat quickly.
Now THAT looks interesting, unlike the folded thick bread slices posted previously that had no bun appeal, as I saw it.

We like top sliced Peppridge farms hot dog buns. The side sliced just don't work as well, as they are sliced all the way through. The top sliced bun forms a nice pocket. Hey, to each his own. There is no wrong way to eat a hot dog. We like Ballpark all beef dogs.
