The remains of St.John's church and graveyard. Founded in 1004 c.e. and rebuilt in 17th century, this church sits on on a headland overlooking Gardenstown (AKA Gamrie) and Seatown. It is approached by rough paths from the surrounding farmland, or the beach.
At one time, the walls had alcoves containing human skulls.
When I lived in Hampshire, I often walked up round St.Hubert's church at Idsworth. This dates from the 11th century and has wall paintings from the 14th. century.
The church is not far from the renowned Chichester Festival theatre and is popular with performers appearing there.
In the same area is the 12th. century church of St.Michael. This church has neither electricity nor water and is lit by candles.
