Should We Stock Up This Year Before Proposed Heavy Tariff On China?

Let's not make this political. But I've seen reports that the proposed tariffs on China in 2025 will be 60%. Of course, that will cause a rise in prices for American consumers on goods produced in China. Social media influencers are warning us to stock up now. But a financial analyst addressed the concern on GMA and said no need to panic.. He said it would take months for the tariffs to be instituted and start affecting prices. Here's a video clip.

We always keep well stocked anyway and I'm actually thinking maybe we should stock up on certain items ahead of what might be another Canadian container strike.

I will continue to buy what I need as I need it or make some substitutions if necessary.

I may come to regret it but the idea of a 60% tariff on Chinese goods seems unlikely to me.

We’ll see.
Aunt Bea buying as needed, even bulk packaging, didn't work out so well during COVID. Costco had the nerve to be out of their own brand of toilet paper (Kirkland) for six months! I was forced to try to find other comparable brands. I even tried Scott again, which I think is the worst. Wound up eventually giving that to my Honorary Daughter except for two rolls, in case a neighbor wanted to borrow a roll (they ain't getting my Kirkland ) TP is one of my security blankets, plus I probably use more than the average person, so having more than enough is a must for me.

Why does everyone hate Scott tissue? For us, it's better on septic system.
When my kids stay I use the fancy quilted angel smooth and soft cloud like stuff for their delicate bums. 😁
They hate Scott tissue too.

I understand the concern.

My thought is that if a 60% tariff is put in place it will have a greater impact on things like electronics and other high end items that I rarely buy.

A 60% tariff on Dollar Tree items won’t have much serious impact for me.

I’m not smart enough to know where the real ‘pinch’ will be and with my luck I’ll stock up on plastic trash bags or something that will remain plentiful while something like coffee filters skyrockets in price.

It’s better for me to just roll with it and see what happens.

It's likely that at some point, analysts like the one on GMA will give us a clue as to which items will be most affected should the tariff pass. Even if it's 30%, consumers will still feel it. You are probably right about electronics being included in the price hike. Like you, I'll make whatever adjustments in spending are necessary to compensate for any price hikes.

I've heard people say they can only use Scott, some because of their septic systems. I don't like Scott because it's not soft enough for my tender bottom, even the so called softer version. Also I do not like single sheet tissue. As Muslims, we are taught to use wet tissue first, then dry. Scott doesn't hold up when wet like other brands do. I've only used one other brand I thought was worse and that was at our timeshare. I noticed next time I went back, they had gotten rid of that brand (can't remember the name). That stuff actually shredded.

When you mentioned Scott, I thought about my kids always joking about our thin Scott tissue. I really don't judge on this issue. It just gave me a chuckle.

I am right there with you. We did not know about the TP issue as we were moving, so we ran out. I was mentally scared forever, and that will NEVER happen again. So. I am stocking up on TP. Only TP. I could go without food, but I’d still need TP. I LOVE TP.

I don't know what items are on the tariff increase list so commenting on the impact isn't possible. Does anyone posting know what items are expected to have the tariff increase?

I have a septic too and usually use Angel Soft which is septic friendly. When I went camping I actually looked forward to purchasing and using a "luxury" brand. :ROFLMAO:

Once severe tariffs are imposed it is likely to cause overall inflation. Because of that I already bought a year’s worth of paper products, toiletries, cleaning supplies, 4 months of coffee which would definitely be subject to tariffs and 6 months of body and face cream. The worst that can happen is nothing and I don’t need to buy this stuff for a year. There’s no downside for me.

I was going to wait a year to buy a new La-Z-Boy chair but just bought that on sale for 500 off. My phone is almost 4 years old but it’s probably good for another 4 so I didn’t replace it. Clothes will be another tariff item so I bought what I needed. Even though I live in a small condo my 3 closets weren’t full so everything fit.

I had my mechanic go over my 16 year old car and he said nothing is wrong with it and should last another 10 years because the mileage is so low. If something major had been found I would have replaced it now.

Watched the video. Not used to advertisements but did wait to see what influencers had to say.

Nothing they talked about will impact me, so stocking up on toasters not going to happen.

I think, all things considered that the impact on us is next to nothing. I hope that when I go to Costco there are paper towels and toilet paper available. During the last panic attack they were sold out??
Have to wonder where people store all this toilet paper. Amazing.
Seems that at one time, milk and eggs were the preferred emergency items.
Now it's toilet paper??????????
I'm getting too old, I guess
