These Fish Are On the Don't Eat List (Reasons Why & Better Choices)

My son told me for years that I shouldn't eat shrimp and told me unappealing things about them (no pun intended). But it wasn't until I read the article below and another that mentioned parasites in the farmed shrimp waters that I decided to cut out one of my favorite seafood items. My favorite is crab legs but I don't always go for the imported king crab. Still, it's hard to know, especially when dining in restaurants, where your seafood is coming from. I used to love fried catfish and I've had friend swai that I really liked the taste of, but alas those are on the list too. I wasn't a fan of tilapia but did buy some at Costco once. Sometime later I heard a man tell his wife when she reached for the tilapia, not to get it because they are "bottom feeders". Check out this list. Any you will or have cut out?

"Nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of methylmercury. However, larger fish that have lived longer have the highest levels of methylmercury because they've had more time to accumulate it. These large fish (swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish) pose the greatest risk."

"Current research suggests that the chemicals used in the manufacture of plastics can leach out and become ingested by marine life. Plastics are petrochemicals, meaning they are produced from petroleum and natural gas. Traveling from the digestive tract to the circulatory system and surrounding tissues. And ocean-dwellers aren’t the only ones chowing down on plastic. Microplastics are found in fresh water too. Carp and tilapia are two freshwater species that were found to ingest microplastics.

When microplastics exist in the ocean, they accumulate pollutants such as PCBs and pesticides that prefer to stick to plastic when it’s around (this is called ‘adsorbing’). The pollutants are also concentrated in this way."

I too have been reading about out poisoned fish, and with great sadness. I love eating ocean fish and shellfish, but these 'farms" pack them in so tightly that they eat mostly each other's poop.

No way would I touch anything from Asian waters, especially Vietnam.

Even the noble Norwegian salmon is no longer safe for gravlax.

As bad as it's gotten, on top of it all, Japan is going to dump all that radio-active water from their nuclear disaster at Fukushima! They're running out of room to store it.

Florida called a state of emergency the other day as poisonous waste is threatening the ocean there=

Toxic wastewater reservoir on verge of collapse in Florida could cause "catastrophic event"

Hundreds of residents in Manatee County, Florida, were ordered to evacuate their homes over Easter weekend as officials feared that a wastewater pond could collapse "at any time." On Saturday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for the area, and the local state of emergency was extended by county commissioners on Tuesday.

I loved Tilapia and a few years back It seemed it was the first fish that was publicized as being raised in filthy ponds in other countries. Photos of these ponds were shown on TV and I never bought it again.
Now farm raised fish is under fire. and rightly so.
It is getting to the point where there is no safe fish to eat unless you are lucky enough to catch it yourself in your own backyard pond. Even at that who knows what is leaching into your pond from streams and run off.

Yes another reason...the farmed fish eating each other's poop. I saw about the toxic disaster in Florida and was concerned at first because my honorary son and his fiancee live in Tampa. But the second report I saw said just outside of Tampa. Then of course they seemed to have skirted a full scale disaster.
@Ruth n Jersey ..You're right!
@old medic "Diva... come here for dinner.... I catch our fish local that day.... Trout Bass and Catfish" Thank you for the invite. :D Believe me, I wish I could!

Even 'unhealthy' foods are fine in moderation as far as I'm concerned. That's the key ... moderation.
There's some who will read reports like this and avoid ingesting these products because they are unhealthy. A percentage of those same folks will insist on lighting up a cigarette or cigar or pour themselves a double martini. That to me is no better; possible worse?

There's lots of things out there that may harm us long term. The key is moderation as far as I'm concerned. How you choose to live your life is a personal choice and you will either be rewarded or penalized for those choices.

I've watched some TV documentaries which show how some of the fish are "farm raised"....especially those in Asia....often raised in ponds of sewage, etc. Tilapia is often mentioned as being among the riskiest. Also, I would Never eat Sushi, or any store/restaurant fish that isn't well cooked. About the Only fish we eat are those we catch in the local lakes.

The ponds of sewage provide us with that Friendly Bacteria they're always telling us are "Good for the gut." :)

Maybe that's is why I cannot eat shrimp anymore. Makes me extremely ill. I stopped eating all farmed fish and seafood sometime ago.

I try to be careful of what I buy but quite honestly I'm not willing to pay for the premium wild-caught certified sustainable seafood available in the local markets.

It's the same with the other sources of protein available in the local markets. I doubt that any of us would eat much beef, chicken, or pork if we saw how the animals were raised and processed.

I never eat anything that spends it's short life in water. No thanks.
In many ways I wish I could do the same.

Fishing today isn't what fishing was in the past. Today there are trawlers with nets strung over miles, catching everything big and small, nets being lost and in turn, dolphins, sea turtles, sea lions, along with a whole host of other sea life being caught-up in and dying as a result.

Dwindling fish stocks account over-fishing, in fact global assessment found that populations of migratory freshwater fish have declined by 76 percent between 1970 and 2016, and even more alarming is the the four-year study of 7800 marine species, concluding that the world's stocks of seafood will have collapsed by 2050 at present rates of destruction by fishing.

Add in damage to sea bed floors, in many cases resulting in irreversible erosion reducing the oceans ability to bury carbon.

I could go on and on about this, but the touch points I've mentioned are damning enough.
