Yesterday, a Canadian TV network reporter in NYC was approached by a NYC Police officer, who ordered the reporter to take off his red poppy , saying it was illegal to wear a political emblem near a polling place. The reporter informed the NYPD officer that at this time of the year, we Canadians wear the red poppy as a sign of Remembrance, to pay tribute to our fallen military members. That TV clip has been running all across Canada, this morning. JIM.

Vietnam vet here: When we came home few if any thanked us. We weren't even welcomed into the service clubs especially the VFW.

Downunder we wear the poppies on ANZAC Day,April 25th. This day is traditionally apolitical.
November 11th was traditionally called Armistice Day when I was younger, I still think of as that. Same day, same sentiments and locally known by different names.

In Australia Long Tan day is commemorated on August 18th. This is now a national day of recognition for Vietnam Veterans who were treated shabbily by the government and the public.

After I returned from Desert Storm, one of the heads of our local VFW asked if I was a member.
Asked him where was the VFW when I and many others returned after Vietnam?
No answer.

Never joined.

It is quite arguably less divided than in recent decades if you consider the voting totals alone. Maybe more so when viewed by demographic groups. Even identity politics is finally being kicked to the curb on both sides.

I hope it's okay to post this story here. We often take drives out of the city, and Uxbridge is one of the places we often go to. It was so nice to see these veterans banners around town.
