Canadian Postal Strike agree or not?

Do YOU think it was a good time for Canadian Postal to go on strike

This is NO news. The Canadian post office people always strike at Christmas time. Me, I don't care 1 little Canadian nickel. Why! My pension is deposited to a bank and my bills are paid automatic.

All I ever get in my mailbox every week is those darn burger adds, pizza adds and other "garbage." For me, the postal service is pretty well out-dated.
I think "out dated" seems to identify the problems with both US/Canadian mail. The majority of past mail delivery has been taken over by markedly cheaper email. And in extremely rural areas it's not "mail" that has to be delivered, but goods/packages. It's an 18th century "mail" service, forced to become a goods delivery system.

That's not very big! And it costs that much to mail them? Well now I know I will stick to cards and a friendly letter! Thanks for the answer PeppermintPatty.
It’s not very big . It’s actually very expensive but I’ve been doing these since 1981 and now I actually get asked if I’m going to be sending them out. It takes a long time to make them but I enjoy doing it.

Canada seems to be struggling with a lot of big issues. Even Europeans can see them:

What should be more like a pyramid with a broad base is getting close to total inversion despite immigration which is mainly padding out the middle instead:

Oh Patty, those look wonderful, and I bet they taste even better! Those who will receive them are sure to be pleased to get them. JIM.

Thank you Jim. These aren’t pictures from this years cookies. It’s still a bit early to start my cookies. I probably won’t start them until the second week in December. Hopefully the strike will be over.

I can see why people are asking if you're sending them out again this year! What a delightful collection of goodies to receive!

Makes no difference to us. We don't exchange Christmas gifts with anyone. And we receive our bills through email so not worrying about not paying on time. And we receive our OAS and CPP through direct deposit so not missing that.
Good for you...BUT consider the many small Canadian business operators who depend on Canada Post to pick up and deliver their products to their customers, across our huge country. If this strike goes on for more than a few days, many of those current Canada Post shipping customers are going to be forced to switch to other courier companies, which will further erode the C.P commercial customer base. Like the national railways, I think that Canada Post should be made an "essential national service " with no strikes. JIM.

You'r right Jim. Today I was listening on the news to a director of a woman's shelter in Vancouver, and she was saying how they get half their years financing through the donations that come at Christmas and this strike was going to hurt that if it doesn't. get settled soon. I think though, that more and more of those sorts of institutions will have to set up apps so that you can make a donation to them online. That women's shelter should have done that already.

Postal Service is less necessary than it once was, but it's still a vital service, and a good one, especially in areas where the commercial shippers are not set up to handle. I asked a business in California to ship a vital repair part for my boat, which was in Sitka, Alaska. I asked that it be sent by the Post Office. He said they always use XX (I can't remember if it was Fed Ex or UPS), and never had a problem.

A month later, I called the shipping company to find out where my part was, and they responded that it had been delivered. After several more attempts to locate the part, and the same default response each time, the package was located in some warehouse in Juneau, where they apparently didn't know how to get the thing to Sitka. It took two months, and most of the time it was effectively "lost." Packages from the lower US to Alaska take about two days using the Post Office, because most of it is done by air. The Post Office knows how to get to where you are, even if it's in an isolated community.

The OINKs are already leaving. Can the DINKs be far behind?

You might find it interesting to look up how many Americans have moved overseas and are immensely pleased with their decision. My best friend was an American and she came to Canada when she was 17. She's also immensely pleased with that decision, made 37 years ago.

My point is that not everybody is happy with where they are. We had a Manitoba couple who moved their family to Russia and then later in a vlog that they were making, went on to express some 'discomfort' about the decision that they'd made. Then I heard of a couple who moved their kids from California to one of the 'I' states, Idaho or Iowa and found themselves in a community that had a large population of white supremicists. I believe they moved back to California after that. And then Marianne Williamson's one daughter is happiest living in London! So sure, some Canadians are leaving but the majority of us aren't.

Can't be fun being a striking Postie right now.

No pay...no benefits (dental, medical)....and Christmas is just around the corner. I bet a lot of them regret their decision to strike. The Company was offering 11-12% over 4 years. The Union wants 20%.

I think the Union is in La-La- Land. Canada Post has been bleeding red for years now.

Yeah something like 8.9 Billion lost in the last 5 years...They have been dying for years now. Bleeding is an understatement. They hit the cartoid artery!!

I will point out that in this year of 2024, we have seen a national railway strike that lasted 6 days, then the national labor board forced binding arbitration, and the strike ended. Then we had strikes at the port of Vancouver and the port of Montreal, and those strikes quickly ended with binding arbitration .

Now we have a Canada Post strike. I predict that the labor board will, once again, step in and force the 2 sides back to the bargaining table, and the strike will be over. All of those strikes were damaging to the Canadian economy. A new Conservative government in Parliament should make it a top priority to enact legislation to make Canada Post an "essential national service " that cannot strike. JIM.

True.

But we were talking about how things are falling apart in Canada.

I'm sure everyone loves to bash Canada these days, but that's okay. We've got tough skin and know that there are all kinds of whiners everywhere. But actually, the OP question was more along the lines of 'how is everyone dealing with a postal strike before Christmas' and what are the posties asking for. A little different than the direction you are taking.

My point is that there are a lot of things that need fixing. People have a right to be upset.
Yes a lot of things need fixing, and I agree people are upset, cause this is a regular thing. As a Canadian born and bred, I believe my country is falling apart at an alarming rate, and many Canadians can't see it or don't want to see it.
CP strike is just another symptom of the problems that plague it.

It's not that everyone love to Bash Canada, it's that you can't help it. Once the jewel of the world, is now a tarnished turd. Every metric, every category that you compare it to all others, it/we have fallen to levels unheard of. It simply is, a shadow of its former self.
Canadians and the country itself, are talked about overseas quite regularly, usually with a lot of questions and disbelief attached.
I know this is about the CP strike, but it is simply a symptom of a much, much larger problem.
