Rant Thread-Tell 'em off Thread

Today I'm ranting at the Bluetooth function (what makes the wireless mouse work) on my laptop: all of a sudden, it's decided to keep shutting itself off and my techy guy can't get here 'till the end of next week.

Annnnd, right after the air conditioner guy came and did the 6-month check on our A/C earlier today and said everything's fine, a great big error message came up on the control and now we got no A/C and it's 93F outside. And they can't get anybody back out 'till tomorrow morning.

Thanks for listening.
First, make sure the mouse battery is charged.

Next...
Go to the device manager by typing "Device Manager" in the Start Menu search box or by pressing WIN+R and typing "devmgmt.msc" in the run dialog box.

Checking the Device Manager is going to be the most tedious part of resolving this problem. You need to look down through the sections of the Device Manager for any mention of a Bluetooth device and/or mouse and check the properties of each instance. Look under "Bluetooth Radios," "Mice and other pointing devices," and "System devices." What you're looking for is "Power Management" tabs like this one.

Any instance of "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" should be unchecked. You absolutely do not want to allow the computer to turn off either the Bluetooth radio or the attached Bluetooth devices to save power as this is the primary cause of the un-syncing issue you're seeing with your mouse.

Thanks, @Rich; I had already tried that but no luck; I've tried several things that google suggested (and of course making sure to reboot computer after each try) but still no luck; every time I check, the darn Bluetooth has turned itself off again, sigh.

Rant # 9923 : I have been discussing climate change on a forum and the person I am talking to denies that it is man made, and that there is nothing to worry about. That big companies are going green to make money, and they are basically useless. I have tried everything I know to tell him that the science behind the measurements is accurate and peer reviewed and has been for many years, and give him references. Yesterday he was shocked at how terrible Hurrican Helene was/is. He was wondering how could this happen to all these good people. They were never in harms way until this monster arrived.

This is my rant: How can some people be so stuck in their ways to not listen to the majority of factual evidence? For years they have talked doubt, and voted for those who denied it. Now they wonder what is happening. The Gulf is 3F warmer than usual. 3F!! Evaporation, and wind currents anybody? This is just starting also. I told him today, that he might want to start reading the real science about our current climate problem. It looks now like we can't stop devastating events, and that climate change is going to affect every aspect of our lives very soon.

That sort of error can be very frustrating. You might want to try a new mouse, perhaps a Logitech that uses their own USB receiver rather than Bluetooth.

That is actually what I have been using:

I've got a different brand of wireless mouse ordered:

to see if for some weird reason it's become a Logitech problem with this computer's bluetooth. Which would really be weird because I've been using a Logitech 187 with this computer ever since I bought it (2 years ago). I did read somewhere yesterday that bluetooth problems sometimes appear after a Win update, sigh.

It is so frustrating. Why people don't understand that the nearly 8 BILLION humans (beings which are known as "Man the TINKERER" for crying out loud) on this planet have most certainly had an effect on climate along with a lot of other things. How in the world would almost 8 BILLION, thinking, tinkering beings NOT have an effect?!

The mind reels at the level of denial, doesn't it?

Air conditioners fuel the climate crisis. Can nature help?

Cooling is a big contributor to global warming. Much of the existing cooling equipment uses hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, which are potent greenhouse gases, and use a lot of energy, making them a double burden for climate change. Even with the phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons required by the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, business as usual means emissions from refrigeration and air conditioning are expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2050, rising from 7 per cent of global GHG emissions today. Right now, the more we cool, the more we heat the planet. If we are serious about reversing current trends, we cannot go about cooling our planet with a business-as-usual approach.

It's actually a triple burden because A/C works by extracting heat from the inside and dumping it outside, and there are losses creating more heat because the process is far below 100% efficient.

Someone set up a Steam account using my email. My online information was leaked a few months ago, and I have since changed my passwords and set up two-factor authentification on all my accounts.

They (Steam) won't delete the account! They have simply removed my email from it and closed the inquiry without my permission. I'm so annoyed. The account was set up fraudulently by someone using an unauthorized email account. Who knows what else this person will do.

I just opened another inquiry with Steam, telling them I'm not satisfied with the response. The whole process had to start all over again, with their automated reply (from a no-reply email address, of course) saying, "Please provide proof of ownership of account" even though I've already told them I don't own the account.

If you're using that logitech mouse with the Logitech receiver (it's a small USB device) it's not going to be a Bluetooth issue. Logitech uses the 2.4 Ghz band just like WiFi. the link to your mouse advertises "Logitech Wireless Mini Mouse M187 Ultra Portable, 2.4 GHz with USB Receiver." I don't think that's a Bluetooth mouse. Here's the last note from that page - "In summary, a Logitech mouse communicates with the transceiver via a low-latency, secure 2.4 GHz wireless connection, transmitting signals like movement and button presses, while the receiver relays that data to the computer." I'm using a Logitech MX Master 3 that can be used with the reciever or Bluetooth, I'm using it Bluetooth because I ran out of USB ports! The receiver will look similar to the one in the attached picture.

Oh, okay, thanks for setting me straight on that. So if it's not a bluetooth issue, I wonder what's going wrong? I've gotten in to the Mouse setting in Device Manager and made sure it's updated. Oh, well, my tech guy will be here in about a week.

Rant..On my local Nextdoor neighbor app some bozo is flooding the for sale section with his items. I don't care when someone posts mutable items but this guy will post the same item four to eight times everyday, and he does it with multiple items. It floods the site to the point all you see is his items, I don't understand why the moderators don't stop it.

An update on this and a lesson learned: Always try at least three new batteries before giving up on a device, lol. That was the problem with both the new and older mice, both of the new batteries I tried were bad, the third new batt worked. (Also maybe stop buying batts in such bulk, lol.)

Oh man... my first comment was "First, make sure the mouse battery is charged." I'll bet next time you'll have it fixed in no time!! Either way, glad to see you mousing again.

In some groups, believing in anthropogenic climate change could result in them being ostracized from their social groups.

You can get a USB hub that gives you more ports.

Steam came back and refused once again to delete this account. 🤬 I told them that I find it odd that they are OK with fraudulent accounts and that this doesn't reflect well on the company.

I'm tempted to set up my own account, using a different email address (I have three) and DM'ing the jerk who used my email address. And I changed all of my passwords yet again, and set up two-factor authentication.

I'm so annoyed, though.

anthropogenic climate change
That is what makes this more frustrating. There is no political agenda in this debate. They refuse to study the science. It might be they didn't do well in science classes in school. :) I can understand that too. But to be angry that our burning of fossil fuels has warmed the planet is weird. They want to believe that mankind wouldn't make that big of a mistake. That we wouldn't do something so stupid, considering it is killing all of life also. It is hard to admit that we let this happen. How did this happen? There are many reasons how this snuck up on us so quickly.

There has been reporting on this science of monitoring CO2 in our atmosphere for decades. When the warnings were sounded in the 60's it was just considered a far out theory. When we started getting the warnings about dangerous breathing conditions in some major cities some people started thinking this was a little more serious. As our awareness of how much we were polluting the atmosphere increased, the Oil Industry increased their lobbying to congress and also their propaganda that all was fine...nothing to worry about. As our economy grew so did our need for energy. To keep up with consumer demands, more energy was needed. To spread Democracy around the world, more energy was needed to fight the wars. More energy = more fossil fuel burning = more CO2 = more warming.

EVs are slowly taking over. When they become the dominant means of transportation as well as high speed rail, we'll get our emissions under control. Of course, it will take 100 years for it to make any difference, but at least our great, great grandchildren will see a reversal of the damage we're seeing right now, and which will get far worse before it gets better.
