YES, this actually has been studied and I've fully read some of the studies- as both a coffee lover and a crazy mug lady- and they revealed several things on why the mug matters! White, narrow cylinder shape ceramic mugs are the best, as the simple appearance of coffee against the backdrop of a bright milky white ceramic mug is more pleasing to the drinker.
As for shape, the narrow cylinder mug keeps coffee warmer as less surface is exposed to the air- also, for the real coffee snob, Dr. Carvalho's research reveals that "more aromatic coffees may suit tulip-style cups with narrower openings. She suggests this can “trap” aromatics in the cup. This encourages the drinker to lift their chin up, and thereby improve their aroma perception". So yes, the mug really matters but the real question is- is there something wrong with me because I actually studied this!?
