Everyone Loves to Rollerskate!

Never tried ice skating, too old then. I did roller skate when I was young. Pretty sure I chipped my hip once, it hurt for years , in the beginning even a sheet on my hip hurt like heck. Now of course it no longer hurts.

Looks like fun! Do you dance on your skates? We used to skate in a line, one behind the other, dancing the same steps as we skated around the rink. We went pretty fast too.
Dio and I used to waltz on skates. I've gotten too rusty, and after breaking both wrists, I am happy to keep it simple. So I don't dance any more.

Dio still does the Backward Strut. You can see this dance step in movies, or on YouTube, but I personally have not seen anyone else do this in many, many years.

Funny thing....I went looking for a video to show the Backward Strut, and I found one from The Hub roller rink. That is where Dio and I went when we were dating!!! Oh, the memories!!!

would imagine you'd need to be fit and skilled to do that one?? but once mastered easy heh?
You skate by putting your foot behind you as you are moving backwards. It very difficult, because it's not a natural motion. It's the opposite of the normal skating stroke.

The Backward Strut was also called The Collegiate.

@Trila I got such a kick out of those videos. I have never seen anyone do the backward strut but we sure did skate the forward moves in sync, much like some of the skaters in the video. And we had the organ music too. How fun to see this. We had these little dance moves while going forward. And when we had a partner, I remember skating the tango.

The Hub had a huge Wurlitzer pipe organ! When I was there, the organ was played by Freddy Arnish.

As a kid I loved to rollerskate. It was such great fun! Ii tried to take it up again about 20 years ago. I had an instructor and got the skates but couldn't keep my balance and kept falling down. It was embarrassing. Then I returned the skates and for a refund. The man took them back and the receipt and said he'd send me a check. He never did. Well that's something I'll not do again!

I've never wasted my time with any kind of sports (actively and passively), unless hiking is sports for you. For me it is not, thus I can exclaim with Churchill "no sports!"

My wife (native Houstonian) grew up in a roller rink and was pretty darn good at it.

I grew up in Chicago and the closest rink was at Riverview (amusement park). Between Christmas presents and my paper boy earnings, I bought a pair of Chicago (brand) skates with fiber wheels and rubber toe stops. With it came a blue metal case. Wow, with my black slacks and blue/black shirt, I was sooo cool (or so I thought).

That lasted a year, until a housefire burnt up all my belongings, including the skate case and skates.

Neither my wife or I have been on skates since our teens, but we both remember the thrills and excitement of gliding along the wooden floors with our friends.

My son is disabled so was in special ed all through school. He wasn't good at sports due to not being able to follow the rules. But he took to roller skating like he was a natural. Every week-end I would drop him and his friends off at one of the local roller skating rinks. We had three to choose from. We bought a good pair of indoor outdoor skates and he skated often.

At that time, his father would take us to NYC for the week-ends and my son would skate in Central Park or even on the sidewalks. Skating helped him develop confidence because he was good at it. The bullies from his school who had picked on him for being in special ed became his friends. I have good memories of him skating.

I'm sorry you didn't get your money back. That was just wrong!!!!

In general, I'm like you....not a competitive sport enthusiast. (but I like hiking!). I don't like any kind of competition, team sport or otherwise.
For me, it's just an activity (like hiking) that I enjoy doing.

When I started this thread, it was just for the fun of it. It didn't matter if the poster skated or not. It was ment to be a place to share funny videos, pictures, etc.

I hope you find something amusing here, as you read this thread!
