What have you bought recently?

It's been a month of Sundays since I last posted here ... time slips by much too quickly. Apologies for my absence.

I've been working on finishing my holiday shopping so I can get the gifts mailed out to the recipients (all are children ranging in age from 7 to 15). None of them live close by but all have a permanent place in my heart. I won't get to see them before Christmas or anytime afterwards since I live in an area that typically gets mounds of snow from November to March (and sometimes even in April) so traveling any distance during those months is difficult.

I bought a string of tiny star shaped lights that I intend to trail across my bedroom dresser as a nite light, also a bunch more circular knitting needles and double pointed ones for knitting.

But this afternoon I went all out and bought a 170 yr old Salem Boston rocking chair! It's black but there is an underside coat of red coming through and it has original stenceling on head rest. All put together with joins and pegging. It will be delivered this week and I cannot wait!

Do you buy much online?

Do you prefer to shop in the brick & mortar stores...?

Did you recently get a great bargain, or feel you've paid too much for something ?

Come and share what you've bought in either ....

This week we bought a new Electric telescopic Pole tree saw.. .. which arrived today..alongside a gallon of oil for it..

Still waiting for half the order to arrive even tho' we paid for a specific date for delivery
We try and support local stores, but sometimes can't find what we're looking for. We don't shop much, but this weekend have been looking for winter vests, or light jacket. The prices for the big brands like North Face, Mammut, Rab are insane.

The last puffy Rab jacket I had was $400 and was useless!

I ended up getting a Military Helikon swagman roll poncho for walking the dog, as I couldn't part with $300 for the only vest I liked from North Face. Even a Nike vest was $180! What is going on?! It doesn't even have sleeves!,

The poncho at $100cdn, was fantastic choice for my needs and looks shockingly good on- plus it's multi functional in a non tacky way - it turns into an amazing sleeping bag - which seems sketchy till you see it.

The same idea ponchos sell for way more in the fancy outdoor stores 500-1000 bucks- imagine! Uh...never!

Anyway, this poncho ended up being an amazing buy - perfect for any outdoor time in the cold, and travel- also washes well and drys in no time!

Military gear is the best!

This little halogen heater arrived today..

The reason I bought it, given all my whining about the high cost of putting the heating on.. is because it has 3 heat settings.. one is as low as 400 watts.. so I'm hoping I can have it on that temp .. to take the real bitter cold off the rooms without resorting to putting the central heating on..at least here in the office room

May the warmth be with you.

Ya, the M65 liner- best! What do you mean by this "should it get past duster coats"?
I do not own a winter coat so I borrow from SO who has dusters from simple rain coat to heavy duty lined in short and long. That liner and a poncho liner have been with me for a while:>) If it is that cold the M65 goes under a lined duster. Next step would be growing fur:>)

Does oscillation make any sense for a radiant heater?

I bought one that just arrived. No oscillation, but it has two 250 watt elements that are separately switched. I wanted something that would be easier on emergency power.

For the most part electric space heaters sold in the US are limited to 1500 watts, and you can find all sorts of shapes and sizes but they all top out at 1500 watts. I'm not saying there are no exceptions, but go shopping and you'll see what I mean. often they have 2 or 3 settings from 500 watts to 1500 watts.

I wanted to (a.) try a radiant-type, and (b.) have a smaller heater for backup power operation.

I wouldn't put it that close to a baby (they can get HOT), or to water (!) but it seems to do a good job.

The other type has the downside that it blows air through an internal element ("ceramic" often) so if it is really cold it mostly goes right up to the ceiling, and unless you close the door or something the room doesn't feel warm very quickly.

However because they blow air through them they can make practical use of a thermostat, so many include one.

Radiant heaters "shine" the warmth on things, like a light.

The unit I bought looks a bit tipsy in that photo, but mine stands up fine on a flat floor even without the "kickstand" in back deployed. I'd probably always use it though, I don't want any risk of fire I can trivially avoid.

most electric heaters here top at 2kw... usually with only 2 heat settings. The little one I bought recenty.. has 3 settings which is why I got it.. it means I can use the lower setting ( 400 kw) and it;s not so costly...

I find the oscilation heats a room quicker than direct heat..
