What I couldn't get this week shopping

I got everything, but it was a very short list, however I was surprised how much the bottom line was for 4 store brand items.

1 box baking mix - $4.99
2 -32 oz containers of yogurt - $5.58
1 28 oz. jar of peanut butter - $4.79
total - $15.36

Unavailable items seem to be sporadic. Two stores didn’t have their store brand dill pickle slicers or even many other types. Next week they’ll likely be there and some other shelves will be empty.

They didn’t have my skim milk yesterday so I ended up at a 3rd store.

I am in the Southern Tier of NY- actually western part the state, and I sure notice that it seems every week the food prices are getting higher.
But local gas has stayed at 3.79 a gal...for a few weeks now.
Here in California the state taxes gas. It‘s always in the mid $4 range, but has exceeded $5.

BTW I am a Vietnam Vet, but served in the bowels of an aircraft carrier. My condolences about your husband. That was a truly wretched war.

The local market is a virtual monopoly, so they can set prices at anything they want. Of course, shoppers always have the option of making a 25 mile round trip to go to another market. I just checked my sales receipt and the bunch I bought was $9.93, but I get a frequent buyer discount.

LOL...I'm gasping at £10 for a bunch of grapes..whereas ours is just £1.99
Our grapes are sold by weight. Often, they are 1.99 a pound, depending on the season. Right now at my store, they are 2.99 a pound. They're not sold by the bunch.

If yours are roughly 1/2 a pound... £1.99, then a full pound would be 3.98. I have a feeling Deb bought more than just a pound.

Grapes aren't typically anywhere near $10 per pound, at least not in my neck of the woods. In season they run 99¢/lb. Out of season: $1.99 - $2.99/lb. Same as @RadishRose reports.

You can buy as much or as little as you want. If they're set up in vented, zip-top, prepackaged bags that are too full for my needs, I simply transfer some to another bag.

I can't imagine the scenario under which I'd pay $10/lb for grapes. Or even $5/lb. Produce that's too expensive is out-of-season and often shopworn, so not as tasty as in-season for both reasons.

Our grapes are rarely sold loose.. more often sold in punnets...

I only know what the grocery store posts on their web page. I also find that with WalMart that the in-store prices don't always correspond with online ones. Even the cashier exclaimed about the price.
