What I couldn't get this week shopping

The store was out of Polar diet cream soda - again! I got vanilla seltzer instead. Otherwise I was able to get the other items on my shopping list, but it came to almost $100 (about 80£ in British currency)! That seems a lot for a week's worth of groceries for a single person.

Did you buy a lot of staples or nonfoods (like deodorant or cleaners) that last longer than a week? My grocery bill is higher than usual when I've restocked several of those.

I spend approx £100/120 when I go shopping for groceries but it lasts me around 3 weeks and I usually only have to buy some milk or fruit in between..

Today I couldn't get Skimmed milk... they just didn't have any , and when I enquired she said quote'' well it is what it is, if we don't have any we don't have any''... what happened to customer service ?

Anyway it seems to have been a problem for a while, I don't know why... I eventually got some after driving to Aldi, and even they were on their last few cartons..

I just looked at my for January (I charge all groceries). For the two of us I spent an average of $150/week at the grocery store and Costco, including replenishment of household goods like batteries, tissues, TP, various soaps, etc. (But not chlorine for the pool or other non-standard purchases.) Some weeks more, others less.
BTW - I got the last bag of store brand "old fashioned" oatmeal on the shelf (the kind that has to be cooked for 5 minutes). They had plenty of "quick and instant" oatmeal, but I don't like the texture of those.
I only eat old fashioned oatmeal, too, but buy it at Costco for $8.99/10 lbs, which lasts us several months.

The store brand used to come in a cylindrical cardboard container. The last 6 months or so, they've been putting it in resealable plastic bags.
That's what Costco is doing now, too. Less packaging. No biggie, when I open the package I put some in a Tupperware cereal container in my pantry, and split the rest up into plastic Coffee-Mate containers that I've saved.

I always have a fair sized stash of empty plastic containers around. They sure come in handy.

No I don't like those either, preferring Rolled or steel cut oats. However I only eat porridge oats in winter and on a couple of days a week, so I only buy a kilo at a time.. and it lasts me weeks and cost pennies..

My dad was of Scottish heritage and he put butter and milk on his oatmeal. I put peanut butter and black strap molasses in mine.
I'm 100 % Scottish from Irish Ancestry , and Celts do not put butter in their porridge... some use salt, and others use sugar and milk.. but no butter
My grandmother was of Swedish/Norwegian heritage and also put butter and milk on oatmeal. Then again, she put butter on practically everything she ate, which probably helps explain her stroke death at 70.

I typically add chopped apples and frozen berries to the oatmeal while it's cooking. When it's done I stir in a little cinnamon and some unsweetened applesauce. No butter or milk.

My favorite near by small Turkish supermarket does not sell soup! It's not that they are out of it, they don't sell it at all. Isn't that weird?

I had to go to our local supermarket twice last week because on Wednesday, the didn't have any of the almond milk I buy (Wholesome Pantry sweetened vanilla) or Shoprite brand whipped cream. When I went back Friday, they had the milk but still didn't have the whipped cream. I mostly got the whipped cream from Costco but since they've been only stocking their brand, I did a taste test and found I like Shoprite's better, so I don't mind paying a little more for it.

@debodun, our grocery sales run wednesday to wednesday. The sale papers come on tuesday but I can do online preview if the mail is late. Depending on what is on sale I will go on wednesday. Sometimes if you wait you won't get the products you are after. I do have to wait until early wednesday morning to load my digital coupons to may account at the grocery store I would be visiting.

If I am not well, I wait and go the following monday or tuesday to hope to get the deals. My stores usually restock after the weekend.

If the stores are out of stock on a sale item a rain check can be obtained and used in the future at the sale price.

I know but I don't go out too often. I like to get what I want when I go without having to make another trip. Also, there have been times for items that they say no rainchecks. I think this is due to their suppliers giving them a good deal and that is why they can offer the item at that price.
