A flower a day ...

My beloved Crocus

My pick for today: Drosanthemum bicolor or "Dewflower", a low growing succulent shrub from S. Africa.

Fell in love with this the first time I saw it in a nearby garden. I put it in a large pot beside my blue fountain where I could enjoy both the flowers and their reflection. In 2011 I used this mosaic of it in the invite to our annual studio/garden party.

The center of each flower contains white translucent petals forming a concave area which reflects light amazingly well.

Looks like I'm looking into the core of the Sun! Fantastic.

Today's flower: Agapetes 'Ludgevan Cross', is cultivar of the more common Agapetes serpens and a huckleberry relative from the Himalayas. Given how delicate it is that must be lowland areas where it can grow among Rhododendrons and such. I've heard it grows epiphytically in trees but I grew these in large wall sconce pots. I always thought the flowers individually would make cool looking pendent earrings.

This is one of the parent plants A. serpens:

More of a precious oddity than a strong presence in the garden.
