Are you streaming ( or binge watching ) any series on Netflix, or any other service? Tell us about it.

I like gritty tv shows like Banshee, Prison Break, & Justified. Hulu has a lot of good shows and movies.
https://tubitv.com has a wide selection of movies and tv shows.
I stream media from Netflix, Peacocktv, Hulu & Disney combo, HBO/MAX, tubitv, Amazon Prime. Paramount ended contract with Showtime so I stopped subscribing.
youtube is also a great place to stream media.
Watching Prison Break currently. It is gripping, nail biting, and addictive. Great cast, acting, plot, and intrigue. Just when you think someone is toast, the unexpected comes crashing in to change everything.

I was searching for a show which was lightweight and did not involve much thought to follow the plot and Rivals showed up a lot. It is a farce and very over the top at times but it does have some tender moments. Think "Dallas" without the restrictions of network TV standards. There are plenty of sexual scenes and there is nudity so if that is something that you wish to avoid I suggest skipping it. Overall, it is a fun romp that makes fun of elites living in England. It is streaming on Hulu.

Edit: The show just took a very dark turn. I'm still enjoying it but it's not all fun and games.

The Diplomat - Season 2 (2024)

Stars Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell; created by Debora Cahn. Netflix, 6 episodes.

The story is well plotted, and makes for continually suspenseful situations. Russell plays the American Ambassador to the UK. Her husband had also been a career diplomat. Most of the plot concerns a continuation of the first series where a British aircraft carrier has been bombed in the Persian Gulf, and the effort continues to try to learn who is the perpetrator. Also the situation arises where Russell’s character is suggested as a replacement for the U.S. Vice President.

The chief problem with the story is that it is semi-ridiculous. The situations and activities of the principal characters, both American and British strain credulity. The way Russell’s ambassador is written makes her a scatterbrain who acts in such an agitated and fussy manor, that it’s difficult to imagine that she was ever chosen for her position by an American president. She would have been an embarrassment, and likely ridiculed by the British diplomatic establishment.

If they had costumed her in more presentable fashion, that would have helped. As it was her ratty hair made her look like she was plucked off the street in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, clothed with an ill fitting pants suit, then thrown into the cast. It’s not that Russell isn’t a fine actress (e.g. in The Americans), but that her character’s over the top writing and costuming make her almost buffoon like.

The cast all perform well, and special note is given to Sewell’s nuanced portrayal.

Creator Cahn wrote a not dissimilar character for Claire Danes in Homeland. So she must favor emotional female characters on the edge. Perhaps she’s aiming for the educated woke female crowd. And wokeness was on display in The Diplomat’s casting. The only thing missing was a homosexual pairing.

The other problem with the season is that it can’t decide what it wants to be: a drama, a political thriller, a farce, a comedy. We’re not sure. There were some light moments, but they were sparse. IMO it would have worked with a little tweaking as a screwball comedy. That would certainly cover over some of its detriments.

As in the finale for the first season, season 2 ended with a shameless cliff hanger, which broadcast what to expect in season 3, which has already been green lit.

The show is watchable despite frequent cringey moments.

For the last few months I've been watching "New Tricks," a BBC program, streaming on hulu. A cast of eccentric characters working unsolved or open cases for the police. 3 old geezers and a younger woman who's the boss. Has a great theme song and I appreciate that it's all crime without gore.

Watched Kubo and the Two Strings. It's a children's animated movie. Like a lot of animated shows, there are lots of lessons for adults too. My favorite line, "Don't mess with the monkey", said by Monkey mind. The ending didn't feel as strong as I wanted it, but it was fun, made me laugh and was entertaining. Something I really needed.

I'm also watching Iron Chef and Great British Baking Show on Netflix for some moments of calm. Oddly relaxing watching beautiful food being prepared.

I've been watching Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial on Netflix. I have two episodes left to watch in the series.

It's pretty well done... kind of a mixture of documentary and docudrama, but the guy who plays Hitler in the latter looks kind of weasel-like. They should have found someone who looked a bit more like Hitler, or at least someone who was a little tougher looking. You can make anyone look like Hitler by giving him a funny mustache and a Nazi haircut.

Yeah, overall I thought it was a powerful production. Here's some commentary I wrote about it this past summer

Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial (2024)

This six part docu-series by director Joe Berlinger is an innovative exploration of Hitler’s beginnings, his establishment of the Nazi Party, Hitler’s gradual rise to absolute power, and his inexorable demise.

There are a plethora of films, documentaries, and series that address the rise and end of the Third Reich, but uniquely Berlinger has used as a basis the 10 month Nuremberg Trials of 1945-46 as an effective outline for the viewer to follow the Reich’s 12 year existence. The subject matter is both fascinating and horrific, although important historically. One confronts its nightmarish unfolding with the same trepidation as one approaches a deathly auto accident: one doesn’t think one ought to look, but one does.

The continuous return to the actual process of the Nuremberg trials, both in archival footage and with reenactments, holds the entire project together, much like the laces on a shoe. What helps bring the whole enterprise to a modern feel is the expert colorization of both the actual trial footage along with other archival footage, much of which had been filmed by Nazi crews during their campaign. The colorization makes it all seem real in contrast to black and white photography which has the effect of making historical events feel ancient and less relevant.

There are only two minor criticisms. Some of the actors portraying the Nazi inner group looked nothing like the real individuals, especially so in their choice of the actor to portray Hitler. However the role of Heinrich Himmler was a very good likeness. Also early on they made a few tasteless inferences relating to a prominent contemporary politician, but thankfully they didn’t continue with that type of thing.

Naturally they had to show videos and stills portraying the results of the tremendous barbarity directed at Jews and some other classes, but only what was necessary to get the point firmly across. I was surprised to learn that Jews were only 1% of the German population, and that they early on had been given warnings to immigrate out of the country. But many simply did not believe that they were in such horrific danger until it was too late.

5 million Jews were murdered in the camps in Germany and Poland. 60 million people lost their lives as the result of the war, most of whom were civilians. In late 1941 Hitler lost one-third of his army in the futile attempt to conquer Russia and to capture Moscow. He didn’t realize it then, but that was the early death blow to his evil campaign.

There was ample mention of Hitler's right hand man, Hermann Goring's morphine addiction. But there was no mention of Hitler's own use of amphetamine, which has the potential to adversely effect normal people. But in Hitler's case we have a psychopath who took powerful stimulants on top of an already dangerous state of mind. That may have sped up his descending into madness.

This is a galvanizing series well directed by one of our leading innovators of true crime documentaries.

The Lincoln Lawyer - series 3 (2024)

I was happy to see that a new season was up for viewing. I'm a huge Michael Connelly fan, having read mostly all his Harry Bosch novels, and all of the Mickey Haller books. The first 2 seasons were pretty well done.

Unfortunately this season was mostly mediocre.
I agree. The first season was excellent, the 3rd was a disappointment. Overall a good show though.

I didn't read the thread, but I put a watch on it, because I'm sure it will come in handy when I go in for knee replacement surgery.

That being said, The Office is one I watch a lot. It's like comfort food for my brain.

Tried watching St. Denis (NBC and Peacock); couldn't get into it, bailed before the end of the first episode. It was just meh IMO (which is too bad because there are a lot of good actors in it; they should've hired better writers but knowing the moneybags pod people who run the network, were too cheap to.)
